  • This go-round, I’ll be talking about two of the  “damned human race”‘s (as Mark Twain put it) worst ideas–sexual mutilation and organized religion.  If this neither upsets you or offends you, I have failed.

Most of us, when we think about sexual mutilation, it is either in the context of psychopathic killers or obscure tribal practices in some place like Bumfuck, Egypt.  Female circumcision is pretty heinous,  and I imagine is roundly condemned by all right-thinking people.  Not that we Americans much give a damn about what happens in the rest of the world, as long as we have cheap gas for our SUVs, and can super-size  our kids’ Happy Meals so they can get as fat as their parents.  No, what I am about to address is cruel, horrid, and despicable–and it happens many times a day here in the good old US of A.  I am talking about regular old male circumcision.  So what’s the big deal, you may ask?  Well, MC, like FC, reduces sensation, making sex less pleasurable.  The only reason MC is really done is to make it harder for little boys to jerk off.  I have a pretty strong stomach for guts and gore, but the very idea of someone, for whatever reason, whacking off part of my willy just creeps me out to the max.  I mean, it has to hurt like hell.  And don’t try to tell me that infants don’t feel pain like adults, they just can’t let others  know about it as well as adults.  If you are a parent and you had your kid circumsized, I feel he has every right to cut your throat while you’re asleep.  Payback is sweet.

What’s more, I contend (free doctoral dissertation idea ahead) that every circumsized male has a deep reservoir of subliminal rage directed at women in general and his mother in particular.  I would bet the rent that the vast majority of serial killers who prey on women are circumsized.  Circumcisim is fucked up, and the sooner it goes the way of buggy whips and whale-oil fired reading lamps, the better.

What is also fucked up is organized religion, all of which are more or less fucked up, with the possible exception of Ba’Hai, Cat Stevens notwithstanding.  Then again, no one knows anything about it, or cares, Cat Stevens etc.  Why do I say this?  Well, look at all the missionaries who did their level pest to destroy tribal cultures (I think I’ll leave in the preceding typo, sort of Freudian.)  Look at the Spanish Inquisition.  At my grandmother’s funeral some years back, the officiating sky pilot (who never even met Mama while she was alive) went on and on about this weird and distasteful idea known as the resurrection of the body–sounded like night of the living dead to me.  And all those religions which mandate circumcision are way fucked up.  Which brings me to Jews.

I feel sorry for Jews, and not just because everyone on the planet, it seems some times, hates them or fears them.  If you are an Orthodox Jew, you don’t have a piddly ten commandments, you have about 450.  And their god doesn’t discriminate–eating off the wrong plate is as bad as knifing your neighbor for no good reason.  And you wanna talk about capricious and arbitrary–just read the book of Job sometime–all his troubles resulted from what was no better than a bar bet between God and Satan (who sounds a lot like God’s equal in the story).  And if that weren’t enough, with the zillions of rites and rituals and seders  of Lebanon and bar mitsvahs and bas  mitzvahs and so on, you don’t even get the promise of eternal life–when yer dead, yer dead.

Oh and lest I sound too discriminatory, let me close with one little comment on Catholicism–how do you get a nun pregnant?  Dress her up like an altar boy.

  • You have failed to consider the health issues in relation to circumcision.  I won’t bother commenting the religion part.  It wouldn’t do either of us any good.  -Kristy

  • There are only health issues requiring circumcision in extreme cases.  Alot of the reasons for circumcision are either old wives tales (hygiene issues) and/or just not based in science (ie, to fit in).  Anyway, I’m uncut, religionless, and proud of it.

  • Wow!  What a blog!

I didn’t have my son circumsized.  At the time he was born, the idea of us moving from the big city to the dinkiest town in the Upper Midwest had never occurred to me.  And I personally think the reason most men are so passive agressive is because somebody whacked the end of their dick off before they were even able to say NOOOOO!  So we didn’t circumsize him.  We did teach him how to properly care for it.  I hope…

As for the religious part of the blog – yes again.  In agreement here!

  • My first husband really doesn’t like women all that much, I’m sure it’s to do with his domineering mother….and btw, he still also has his “touque”…Canadianeze for winter hat   My mom, a nurse, is still grossed out by that but he kept himself very well, no doubt due to the fact that his dad and 2 out of his 3 brothers all had theirs intact as well.  The other brother, Robbie, had an injury that forced a circumcision at the age of 3….for which he always seemed to have a complex, being different than his father and brothers…..which brings me to my own son.  I don’t believe in circumcision, however, my 2nd husband and father of my kids is circumcised….I agonized about that procedure like you have no idea, however, in the end, his father’s wishes won out…..didn’t want him to be “different” and also didn’t know how to care for a foreskin since he has none himself….sigh…..I can remember how I felt in the hospital when they did it…..he may have been 2 or 3 rooms over but I swear to God I heard him scream in my hospital room….traumatic.  It was for me so I can’t imagine what it was like for the poor little fella….   On organized religion, I agree.  I believe that the original premise behind it was right and good and valid, however, it’s just ended up as another political ploy for men to have money, power and control and denigrate women…….that’s all for now folks!

  • circumcision….what the fuck is that all about anyway? Hygiene? Don’t make me laugh. Just bathe regularly. Religious reasons? Well, that’s a toughie because ingrained belief is hard to fight and while I’m not in any way religious, I respect others’ right to follow the faith of their choice. So I don’t agree with what you say about the Jews. You shouldn’t pander to such base prejudice, bearded one. But I understand the desire to play the Devil’s advocate….
Still, there are a lot of guys out there (Americans, it goes without saying…) who are growing back their foreskins. Weights and surgically implanted ‘balloons’ apparently do the trick after about a year or so. Parents, if you’re thinking about mutilating your child, think again; he’ll be wanting to restore it in a while….

  • While I can’t necessarily agree about the circumsicion part of the rant, I agree wholeheartedly about the religion part.  My son was circumcised due to my, well, my family’s religious beliefs.  I haven’t baptized him, and that really rubs some of them the wrong way.  I was raised Catholic, and the guilt instilled in me, makes it hard to deviate from the Christian norm, no matter how I try.  Not that I believe Christianity in itself is bad; the people behind it certainly are though…What can I say, I first tried converting to Wicca, and couldn’t do it, and then Ba’Hai and still couldnt muster the balls to do it.  That right there should be a cue for me something is wrong with the ways I have been taught.  Which brings me to now…I can only say I’m universal lightly;  I have my own ideas and beliefs that I adhere to now.  Beliefs and ideas I hope are just and well-founded.  And I love theology, and find that the basis for most religions is BEAUTIFUL…of course men (and women) have to come and fuck with it, and corrupt it, for everyone else.  Religion: a topic to start a war.

Now I DO NOT believe that a son has the right to SLIT HIS PARENTS’ THROAT, because he is circumscized…I do believe that it more than likely DOES affect them (emotionally) later in life though, and I wish I would have been a little more wizened when I made my descision.  But I don’t believe my son will detest me because of it.  I felt guilty as hell when I heard him cry; but as someone who hadn’t wised up to society yet, I don’t think it’s fair to condemn me or others for it.  But then, I guess life isn’t fair sometimes is it?  (MOST of the time, actually)

I could and would, most likely go on forever about all of this, but I think it’s best if I just shut up now, and don’t turn this comment into one of my novellas. You write passionately and beautifully.  I adore both your and Kathy’s ideas on life, and whether I agree or not, I love to listen.  This was a great piece.

  • I should hope that my son does not slit my throat in the future…..I held out until he was four years old and it was surgically neccessary to do it because he was one of a small group of males for whom the foreskin does not grow at a comparable rate to the rest of him.

Before you condemn everyone for doing this, I want you to stop and imagine that its 2am and this kid wakes up with an erection…..because he is in agony. He is screaming and crying and feels that he is being punished because his penis HURTS all the time, its irritated all the time, BECAUSE he is still “intact” and his foreskin is too small and too tight to move with his penis.

And yes, I did everything else that me and my doctor could think of, first.

I didn’t want to do it, but when he started to have pain problems and develop inflammation, I was first in line to get it done because I DON’T want him to have sexual issues when he gets older (because he was now associating an erection with extreme pain), and more immediately, I can’t stand to see my child in pain.

One week after his surgery he was running around trying to show everyone his “sports model” as he called it, after a male friend took him aside to explain what would happen. He was so happy to be able to sleep at night and now, like every other boy in town, his penis is his favorite toy

We aren’t all evil parents for doing it. Don’t condemn everyone.

  • Dude I agree with some of your points although I believe you try a bit to hard to piss people off. Now if you can write some thing that shocks or offends people with out actualy condeming or slandering them, that would be semi-impressive.
